Inter-Ministerial Coordination Meeting for the Preparation of Jakstranas on the Management of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel

In the context of preparing the National Strategy Policy (Jakstranas), which will later be made in the form of a Presidential Regulation on National Policies and Strategies related to the Management of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel, the Directorate of Regulation of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DP2FRZR) BAPETEN held an inter-ministerial coordination meeting related to the submission of Jaktranas activity proposals in the RPJMN in IE 15 related to the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

The coordination meeting was opened by the Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Sugeng Sumbarjo, who, in his opening remarks, conveyed the importance of managing radioactive substances and nuclear materials from the birth of radioactive substances and nuclear materials until they are disposed of. In addition, it was also conveyed that in the utilization of radioactive materials, the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) must be used.

The remarks were continued by the Acting Deputy Chairperson for Nuclear Safety Assessment, Taruniyati Handayani, who conveyed the importance of this coordination meeting so that we can determine the preparation of the Draft Presidential Regulation into the RPJPN 2025-2045 and RPJMN 2025-2029 in accordance with the provisions stipulated by the National Legal Development Agency (BPHN).

The event continued with a presentation on "Radioactive Waste Management and Its Relation to B3 Waste Management" by the Director of Hazardous and Toxic Waste or B3 Waste Management and non-B3 waste KLHK Achmad Gunawan Widjaksono, a presentation on "Issues of Radioactive Waste Management Regarding the Draft RPJPN 2025-2045" by representatives from Higher Education and Science and Technology Bappenas Aruminingsih, a presentation on "Government Policy in the Environmental Development Program in the RPJPN 2025-2045 and RPJMN 2025 -2029" by a representative from the Directorate of Environment Bappenas Irfan, and a presentation on "The Urgency of Preparing Jaktranas for Radioactive Waste Management and Spent Nuclear Fuel" by DP2FRZR BAPETEN Mukhlisin.

In the discussion and question-and-answer session, it received a good response and several inputs, including from representatives from BRIN and from the Ministry of Health.

The coordination meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia/National Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Bappenas), the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KLHK-RI), the Ministry of Industry-RI, the Ministry of Health-RI, BRIN, and related work units within BAPETEN.

The event was closed by the Acting Deputy Chairperson for Nuclear Safety Assessment, who, in her closing remarks, expressed her gratitude for the presentations and suggestions from the meeting participants. The results of the follow-up to this meeting will be followed up by the team and sent to the participants. Tomorrow's visitation activity is expected to provide insight to participants, especially invitees from ministries/institutions other than BRIN and BAPETEN.

On the second day, July 25, 2024, a visitation activity was carried out at the BRIN Radioactive Waste Processing Installation (IPLR) for all participants so that it is hoped that it can provide an overview of the importance of radioactive waste management.
