Verification of Operating Permits for Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical Production Facilities at RSUD Abdul Wahab Syahranie Samarinda, and Radiotherapy Facilities at RSUD dr. Doris Sylvanus Palangkaraya
Kembali 18 Desember 2024 | Berita BAPETEN | 17 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), through the Directorate of Licensing of Radiation and Radioactive Materials (DPFRZR), conducted a Verification of Operating Permits for Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical Production Facilities at RSUD (Regional General Hospital) Abdul Wahab Syahranie, Samarinda City, East Kalimantan, and a Verification of Operating Permits for Radiotherapy Facilities at RSUD (Regional General Hospital) dr. Doris Sylvanus, Palangkaraya City, Central Kalimantan, in parallel, on December 16-18, 2024.
The Verification of Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical Production Facilities and Radiotherapy Facilities aims to ensure that radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production facilities using cyclotrons and radiotherapy using Linear Accelerators (LINACs) are declared safe for workers, the public, and the environment. The Verification Team ensured that the design met safety standards through calculations of the radiation containment structure and main equipment, supporting equipment, human resource competency, and operating procedures for production activities that met radiation safety and source security requirements.
The inspection team, led by Ishak, Director of the DPFRZR, and team members Ahmad Maulana, Maradi Abdillah, and Naufal Alif Syarifuddin, conducted verification of the radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production facilities at RSUD Abdul Wahab Syahranie using IBA and Cyclone Kiube cyclotrons. The inspection team, led by Iin Indartati, manager of the Health Facility Licensing Function Group, and members Made Pramayuni and Yaya Umaya, verified the radiotherapy facilities at dr. Doris Sylvanus Regional Hospital using Elekta and Synergy LINACs.
The scope of the on-site inspection includes document and technical review of the conformity of the constructed facility design and the adequacy of the radiation barrier thickness in the cyclotron bunker. The facility inspection includes the target material receiving and storage facilities, the cyclotron facility, and the radiopharmaceutical production facility; commissioning tests of the cyclotron and bombardment tests of radioisotope production and the radiopharmaceutical synthesis process in the hot cell; quality control of radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production results; safety systems and the cyclotron operating system; radiation exposure measurements at the facility; quality control equipment; inspection of the waste treatment system (solid, liquid, and gas); inspection of radiation protection equipment and tools; and personnel inspections.
Similarly, for the radiotherapy facility at dr. Doris Sylvanus Regional Hospital, this inspection includes document and technical review of the conformity of the constructed facility design and the adequacy of the radiation barrier thickness in the radiotherapy bunker; ensuring the performance of the main and supporting equipment; conducting radiation exposure measurements and dosimetry tests; ensuring patient flow and personnel capability in operating the Linac according to standards; and inspecting radiation protection and safety equipment and the performance of its safety system.
Based on the verification results for the radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production operating permit and the radiotherapy facility operating permit, the hospital is committed to completing the findings submitted by the BAPETEN team within a specified timeframe. The smooth verification process was supported by the hospital's participation and positive response to the process. Any deficiencies were considered as input and technical suggestions for compliance with radiation safety regulations and applicable safety standards.
The cyclotron operating permit is expected to be a major step forward for RSUD Abdul Wahab Syahranie in improving medical facilities in Kalimantan, particularly in meeting the need for F-18 radioisotope production and fulfilling the hospital's nuclear medicine needs. This will enable it to provide high-quality healthcare services previously difficult for the local community. For RSUD dr. Doris Sylvanus Regional, as the primary radiotherapy referral centre in Central Kalimantan, the radiotherapy operating permit will ensure safe, effective, and standardized services are provided to the community.
