IAEA Physical Inventory Verification (PIV) Inspection Activities in Indonesia in 2024
Kembali 04 Juli 2024 | Berita BAPETENTo ensure the implementation of safeguards related to nuclear materials, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) carries out various inspections to member countries, one of which is the PIV inspection. PIV inspections are carried out with the aim of ensuring that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities related to nuclear material recycling by the method of item counting, tag checking, Non Destructive analysis, observation of installation functions and interviews.
The implementation of inspection activity was carried out accompanied by the Inspection Team from BAPETEN. This activity was based on a letter sent by the IAEA with number 24-INS-003, on June 3, 2024, which informed that the IAEA would carry out inspections at several nuclear installations in Indonesia. Routine PIV inspections this year, starting from June 26 to July 4, 2024.
Inspections were carried out at several nuclear installations in Indonesia, including the Kartini Reactor located in the Science and Education Area (KSE), Ahmad Baiquni-BRIN Yogyakarta, on June 26, 2024, which was then continued at the Triga Reactor located in the Joint Working Area (KKB) Tamansari-BRIN, Bandung, on June 28, 2024, and continued at the G. Siwabessy Multipurpose Reactor. A. Siwabessy-BRIN Serpong on July 1 to 2, 2024, and the Experimental Burning Element Installation (IEBE)-BRIN Serpong on July 3, 2024.
The inspection activities were closed with the Annual Safeguards Review Meeting, which was held at the BAPETEN office, on July 4, 2024. This meeting was utilized by Lai San Chew as the previous Country Officer Indonesia to introduce Regine Schuler as the new Country Officer Indonesia, to the Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection of BAPETEN, Zainal Arifin, due to the change in Indonesia's status from Safeguards Division of Operations A2 (SGOA2) to SGOA1.
In addition, the meeting also discussed other technical matters related to safeguards and the results of a review of the implementation of safeguards in Indonesia over the past year.
