Environment, Climate, Forestry and New Renewable Energy Festival (LIKE)

In the framework of the Road to COP 28 UNFCCC Dubai UAE 2023, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will hold the "Festival of Environment, Climate, Forestry and New Renewable Energy (LIKE)", on 16-18 September 2023. The main theme zone of the LIKE Festival is "New Renewable Energy". Specifically, for Talk Show activities with the theme "Nuclear Energy as a Potential New Renewable Energy Source in Indonesia",will be held on 16 September 2023, in the Blue Zone of New Renewable Energy (EBT), Indonesia Arena Indoor Stadium or Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS).

The talk show, which aims as a discussion forum on the commitment of New and Renewable Energy types of nuclear energy, to Regional Governments, the business world, the general public, schools, and universities, was moderated by Putri Indonesia Peace 2017 Dea Rizkita, by presenting 2 speakers from BAPETEN and BRIN.

As the opening, Dea said the Government had included the nuclear option in the national energy strategy and was ensuring readiness to make commitments to the nuclear development program. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has formed a Preparatory Team for the Establishment of the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO). Nuclear energy is utilized by considering the security of national energy supply on a large scale, reducing carbon emissions and still prioritizing the potential of new energy and renewable energy (EBT) in accordance with its economic value.

The event began with a presentation on "The Role of BAPETEN in Energy Transition" by Plt. Chairman of BAPETEN Sugeng Sumbarjo. He was explaining "The duties and functions of BAPETEN and BAPETEN's readiness in supervising nuclear power plants, starting from Design Review, Site Survey, Construction, Commissioning, Operation to Decommissioning."

"All of these supervisions aim to ensure the welfare, security and peace of the community. And also to ensure the safety, health of workers and the public and environmental protection". He added.

The next presentation was "Readiness for the Implementation of Nuclear-Based NRE Technology in Indonesia" by the Director of Environment, Maritime, Natural Resources, and Nuclear Energy Policy of BRIN Muhammad Abdul Kholiq. He explained "Utilization of national nuclear research & innovation, Cyclotron Research Reactors and Accelerators, Global Development of NPP Status, Indonesia's Experience of having a nuclear reactor, Status of NPP Preparation in Indonesia, Development of Small Modular Reactors and Needs Energy for Mineral Resources Processing."

With the implementation of this talk show, it is expected to provide an understanding of nuclear and its benefits as an energy source. It is also can introduce nuclear policy, potential, and urgency as one type of NRE in Indonesia and provide a brief overview of Indonesia's readiness in nuclear implementation to meet the Primary Energy mix target.
