Courtesy Call with the Unit Head of the IAEA’s Nuclear Safety and Regulation and Waste Division

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) received a visit from Ronald Pacheco Jimenez, Unit Head of the Control of Radiation Sources Unit, at the BAPETEN office on Thursday, September 11, 2025. The visit served as a courtesy call and an opportunity to discuss a national workshop on Proton Beam Therapy (PBT), covering nuclear safety, security, and radioactive waste management, as part of the IAEA's efforts to ensure the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

During the courtesy call, the Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection, Zainal Arifin, was accompanied by the Director of Licensing of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DPFRZR), Asep Saefulloh Hermawan; the Head of the BAPETEN Training Division, Ahmad Ciptadi; the Director of Inspection of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DIFRZR), Zulkarnain; the Director of Regulation of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials, Mukhlisin; the Director of Inspection of Nuclear Installation and Materials (DI2BN), Lukman Hakim; and the Coordinator of the Cooperation Working Group, Indah Anissa.

In his remarks, Zainal Arifin stated, "Thank you for taking the time to visit Indonesia for the national workshop on Proton Beam Therapy (PBT). We greatly value this kind of support from the IAEA, such as the assistance provided during this week's national workshop."

"For this week's workshop, I have brought two experts from Spain, as they have experience with 11 PBT facilities. We recognize the high level of complexity involved in PBT, including neutron activation. In this regard, the IAEA can assist member states by providing the necessary technical information," added Ronald Pacheco Jimenez. "Through this workshop, we also aim to gather more detailed information regarding materials that may be released from facilities of this type to maintain safety and ensure the peaceful and secure management of radioactive waste for the benefit of the public and the surrounding environment," added Ahmad Ciptadi.

Ronald Pacheco Jimenez concluded the session by stating, "This year, I will be convening a special meeting regarding metal waste. We will invite Indonesia to participate in discussions about metal waste issues, especially those related to metal waste storage areas. to participate in discussions concerning metal waste issues, particularly regarding metal waste storage areas. This is crucial for proper management and for preventing contamination. Should you require support in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us at the IAEA; we would be more than happy to assist you."

Mukhlisin expressed his expectation to join the meeting to ensure safe management of metal waste for the environment and community. The event continued with a workshop on Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) conducted in collaboration with the BAPETEN Training Center. (BHKK/CD/Translator: GP)
