The non-profit organization Women in Nuclear (WIN) collaborates with the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), and PT. Thorcon Power Indonesia is holding a Webinar entitled “Clean Enviromental Electricity Webinar for The Capital City of the Archipelago, East Kalimantan” on September 12, 2022 by online. This event aims to provide insight and an educational platform in discussing clean energy, especially nuclear energy.

This event is attended by the President of WNI Tri Murti, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana, Director of Community Empowerment of the IKN Authority Susianah Affandy, and Coordinator of Non-Power Reactor Regulator - BAPETEN Nur Syamsi Syam and COO PT. Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana, at the opening of this event stated that the energy in IKN must have smart, green and beautiful principles as planned by the government. “Power Plants that are not clean in terms of carbon emissions will not be an energy choice for IKN in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, WIN President Tri Murti explained that the government’s plan to rest the 12 coal-fired power plants (PLTU) that are currently operating requires a clean energy source that can replace the power of the idled PLTU. “Nuclear is a source of clean energy, for example generation 4 reactors, namely wax reactors and sodium reactors,” she explained.

In her presentation, the Director of Community Empowerment at the IKN Authority Susianah Affandy said that currently, the government is planning hydroelectric, solar and wind power plants to provide energy for IKN. He said there were no plans to build a nuclear power plant to meet electricity availability in IKN.

Coordinator of Non-Power Reactor Regulator - BAPETEN Nur Syamsi Syam, who was the resource person in this webinar, explained that nuclear as a clean energy source has advantages in terms of baseload, low carbon emissions and competitive prices. Regarding the construction of nuclear power plants, Nur Syamsi emphasized that there is now a pre-licensing mechanism at BAPETEN for parties interested in building nuclear power plants in Indonesia.

“Pre-licensing includes technical guidance, consultation on safety, security, safeguards (3S) and review of the reactor design. “So, the process is quite long to get the construction of the nuclear power plant,” said Nur Syamsi.

Director of Operations PT. Thorcon Power Indonesia Bob S Effendy, as the planning to build a nuclear power plant in Indonesia, emphasized that the need for clean energy is in line with the Net Zero Emission goal launched by the government. He also stated that there was no need to worry because there was already a state institution tasked with maintaining nuclear safety in Indonesia, namely BAPETEN.
