The meeting followed up on the cooperation that has been established between BAPETEN and the USNRC since 2021. It also aimed to further discuss proposed training programs that had previously been submitted by BAPETEN to the USNRC in 2025.

In his remarks, the Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment and Acting Executive Secretary of BAPETEN, Haendra Subekti, stated that BAPETEN is continuously strengthening the nuclear regulatory infrastructure in Indonesia. One of these efforts is carried out through capacity building programs for regulatory human resources. This initiative constitutes an important part of preparing regulatory and oversight readiness for the planned development of Indonesia’s first Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN).

Responding to this, Bethany Cecere, representing the USNRC, expressed appreciation for BAPETEN’s initiative to strengthen nuclear regulatory capacity. The USNRC reaffirmed its readiness to continue supporting technical cooperation and capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening a safe and secure nuclear regulatory system. During the meeting, the USNRC delegation was also accompanied by Glenn Kelly, Senior Consultant from Numark Associates Inc., which partners with the USNRC in implementing technical activities related to the oversight and regulation of nuclear power plants in the United States.

On this occasion, BAPETEN presented the latest developments regarding the status of the nuclear power plant (NPP) licensing process in Indonesia, as well as plans to strengthen the capacity of regulatory human resources. This initiative constitutes an essential component in ensuring the readiness of the regulatory body to oversee the potential development and future operation of nuclear power plants in the country.

Through this meeting, it is expected that cooperation between BAPETEN and USNRC will continue to be strengthened, particularly in supporting the enhancement of nuclear regulatory inspectors’ competencies, the exchange of technical knowledge, and the strengthening of the nuclear regulatory oversight system in addressing future challenges.
