BAPETEN Visit to BRIN Radioactive Waste Facility for the Drafting of Government Regulation (RPP)
Kembali 23 April 2026 | Berita BAPETEN | 16 lihatThe Directorate for Regulation of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DP2FRZR) of BAPETEN conducted a visit to the Radioactive Waste Management Installation (IPLR) of BRIN on April 23, 2026. This visit was carried out as part of the preparation of a Draft Government Regulation (RPP) to replace Government Regulation No. 61 of 2013 concerning radioactive waste management.
In addition, this activity aimed to obtain perspectives from IPLR as Indonesia’s radioactive waste management facility, particularly regarding the practice of reusing disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS). This practice has been regulated under Government Regulation No. 61 of 2013 to reduce waste and optimize the utilization of DSRS.
The event commenced with opening remarks and directions from the Director of Nuclear Facility Management, Mohammad Subekti, who expressed support for the refinement of regulations on reuse and recycling to be incorporated into the RPP. He noted that there have been increasing requests submitted to BRIN regarding the reuse of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS). The activity then continued with a presentation by the Coordinator of the IPLR Management Team, Titik Sundari, who elaborated on the benefits of reuse practices, their implementation at IPLR, and the mechanisms for execution based on applications submitted by prospective users.
Vatimah Zahrawati, Head of the Drafting Team for the Government Regulation (RPP) replacing Government Regulation No. 61 of 2013, stated that the regulatory framework for radioactive waste management continues to prioritize the return of DSRS to their country of origin, while their transfer to domestic facilities is carried out on a limited basis subject to approval from the regulatory authority. She also emphasized that the implementation of reuse and recycling of DSRS is conducted based on assessments and testing to ensure the integrity and safety of their utilization.
The activity continued with a visit to the IPLR interim storage facility to gain a better understanding of the processes of receipt, identification, waste conditioning, and preliminary assessment of DSRS in support of reuse practices. The meeting resulted in an agreement on the reuse and recycling scheme, covering administrative procedures, types of testing, and the responsibilities of the respective parties.
