Kembali 28 Januari 2026 | Berita BAPETEN | 22 lihatBAPETEN received a visit from a delegation of Ontario Tech University at the BAPETEN office on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The visit aimed to establish communication and cooperation with BAPETEN in the development of nuclear human resource capacity and to gain support for Indonesia’s nuclear regulatory preparedness.
The courtesy call was attended by the Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment, Haendra Subekti, accompanied by the Director of Licensing for Nuclear Installations and Materials, Wiryono, the Head of the Bureau of Legal Affairs, Cooperation, and Public Communication, Ishak, the Director of Inspection of Nuclear Installations and Materials (DI2BN), Lukman Hakim, the Head of the Center for Regulatory Assessment of Nuclear Installations and Materials (P2STPIBN), Taruniyati Handayani, as well as the Coordinator of the Cooperation Functional Group, Indah Anissa.
The event continued with opening remarks delivered by Haendra Subekti who stated "Ontario in Canada is known as one of the centers for the development of nuclear power plants, with approximately six to eight reactors, including those developed by Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in collaboration with North American energy partners. This condition reflects the strong ecosystem of the nuclear industry and education in the region. Meanwhile, Indonesia is also considered to have similar potential, as it already offers nuclear engineering programs at Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Bandung Institute of Technology".
In his remarks, Dr. Steven Murphy stated, "Indonesia’s energy development is currently still in the preparatory stage toward 2030 and is viewed as a long term plan involving cross country cooperation and the use of proven technologies. An appropriate strategy is to build an energy mix that does not rely solely on nuclear power, but is combined with gas, coal, and renewable energy to maintain system flexibility. In addition, the issue of human resource availability remains a significant challenge faced by all parties."
Haendra Subekti also highlighted the importance of emphasizing the use of proven technology in accordance with regulations, noting that Indonesia needs to adjust or adopt regulatory regimes based on the technology to be selected.
BAPETEN further emphasized the importance of careful and phased long-term planning for the development of nuclear energy in Indonesia, grounded in proven technology and accompanied by the strengthening of regulatory frameworks and human resource capacity. This activity is expected to foster a strong cooperative relationship between BAPETEN and Ontario Tech University. The discussion concluded with expressions of appreciation and brief closing remarks.
