BAPETEN and NEA of Singapore Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Nuclear Regulatory Cooperation
Kembali 30 Juni 2026 | Berita BAPETEN | 23 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) of Indonesia and the National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy regulation. The signing ceremony took place at the BAPETEN headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. This signing reaffirmed the commitment of both institutions to strengthening bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy oversight.
The MOU was signed by the Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Zainal Arifin, with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NEA and Deputy Secretary (Sustainability) in the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) of Singapore, Benjamin Koh. The event was witnessed by high-level delegations from both countries, including Singapore's Minister for the Environment and Sustainability (MSE), Grace Fu; Singapore's Ambassador to Indonesia, Kwok Fook Seng; and Group Director of the Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science Group NEA, Ang Kok Kiat, along with relevant staff. Furthermore, the event was also attended by representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, namely the Director of Legal Affairs, Political and Security Agreements, Indra Rosandry, and the Director for Southeast Asia, Elizani T. X. Nadia Sumampouw, along with other relevant staff.
Through this partnership, BAPETEN and NEA of Singapore will collaborate on developing nuclear energy oversight policies, monitoring the use of radiation and nuclear energy, preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear emergencies, and environmental radiation monitoring. To implement this scope, the two institutions have agreed to carry out a series of activities, including joint training programs, personnel exchanges, research partnerships, and technical meetings.
This agreement builds on the foundation of long-standing bilateral cooperation between the two regulatory bodies. Furthermore, this partnership also strengthens the two countries' commitment to information-sharing and coordination through various ASEAN-level platforms, including the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM). This collaboration reflects the two institutions' shared commitment to continuously improving nuclear safety and security through knowledge exchange, capacity building, and cooperation in the field of nuclear energy oversight.
Zainal Arifin emphasized that this collaboration represents a long-term strategic partnership for the regional safety architecture. "This collaboration has significant potential to be elevated into a more strategic and impactful collaboration, particularly in strengthening regulatory capacity, enhancing safety and security oversight, and addressing emerging challenges in nuclear and radiation applications," said Arifin. Meanwhile, Benjamin Koh stated that this collaboration is crucial for strengthening cooperation on nuclear safety and emergency preparedness, especially as Singapore is assessing the potential of nuclear energy for its future. "This step also reflects NEA’s commitment to working with ASEAN partners to strengthen regional cooperation, build trust, and enhance collective preparedness for radiological emergencies," Koh explained.
