National Workshop on Safety and Regulatory Aspects Specific to SMRs
Kembali 16 Juni 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 21 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held a National Workshop on Safety and Regulatory Aspects Specific to Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Jakarta on June 16, 2025. The event, which will run until June 20, aims to develop human resources, particularly in the field of nuclear power plant (NPP) utilization supervision.
The event was attended by Haendra Subekti, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment; Ahmad Ciptadi Syuryavin, Head of BAPETEN's Education and Training Division; IAEA experts Vincenzo Tiberi and Suren Bznuni; Stewart Magruder, an expert from the United States; and Marcel De Vos, an expert from Canada. In addition to BAPETEN representatives, the training included representatives from other stakeholders, including the State Electricity Company (PT PLN Persero), Indonesia Power, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Gajah Mada University (UGM), and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), who attended via video conference.
The event began with remarks from IAEA expert Vincenzo Tiberi, who stated that this was a form of the IAEA's continued support for member states in developing SMRs in their respective countries. "In this workshop, we will discuss SMR technology, including regulatory aspects, passive safety systems, and nuclear power plants on water," he added.
Ahmad Ciptadi Syuryavin also explained the purpose of BAPETEN holding this training. In addition to meeting the need for human resource development, he stated that the development of SMR technology is very interesting and suitable for Indonesia's archipelagic nature.
Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti, in his opening remarks, explained that nuclear power plants are already included in Indonesia's Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). Therefore, he hoped this activity would serve as an effort to prepare for the supervision of Indonesia's first nuclear power plant.
Next, a presentation entitled "Current Situation and Perspectives for SMRs in Indonesia" was presented by Petit Wiringgalih, followed by a presentation entitled "IAEA Activities and Initiatives on Safety and Security of SMRs" by Vincenzo Tiberi and a presentation entitled "Overview of SMR Technologies" by Stewart Magruder.
This activity is expected to improve the competence of human resources in Indonesia in overseeing the use of nuclear energy, particularly nuclear power plants (NPPs). [BHKK/Da/Translator: GP]
