Acting on recommendations from the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) regarding the disposal of Cs-137-contaminated shrimp, a total of 494 cartons containing contaminated shrimp were destroyed at the Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) and non-B3 waste management facility operated by PT Prasadha Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLi) in Bogor Regency. The destruction was performed via incineration using a vertical stoker-type incinerator at temperatures of 800–900°C, equipped with air emission control systems and a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS).

This destruction operation was conducted through an integrated effort involving the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), BAPETEN, Barantin, and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), all members of the Cs-137 Contamination Handling Task Force. This inter-agency collaboration ensured that all procedures, from handling to the final destruction process, adhered to radiation safety standards. Attending the event was BAPETEN’s Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment, Haendra Subekti, accompanied by BAPETEN’s Director of Technical Support and Nuclear Emergency Preparedness, Yudi Pramono.

Prior to the destruction process, a press conference was held to brief the media representatives present to witness the event. Rasio Ridho Sani, the Deputy for Environmental Pollution and Degradation Control at KLH/BPLH, who also serves as the Head of the Contamination Mitigation and Handling Division, stated, "The government, through BAPETEN, conducted testing on two containers of shrimp suspected of contamination. Out of a total of 3,250 cartons inspected, 494 cartons (5.7 tons) were found to have Cs-137 surface contamination on their exteriors."

At the conclusion of the event, BAPETEN’s Director of Technical Support and Nuclear Emergency Preparedness stated that to ensure the destruction process remained safe for the surrounding environment, samples of the incineration ash would be tested at BAPETEN’s laboratory. [BHKK/AQ/Translator: GP]
