BAPETEN Holds Public Consultation on Power Reactor Safety and Nuclear Liability Accountability
Kembali 14 Oktober 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 13 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held a Public Consultation on Power Reactor Safety and Nuclear Liability Accountability in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands, on Tuesday, 14 October 2025. This event was aimed to gather input from stakeholders on draft regulations that support the safe, secure, and responsible use of nuclear energy.
The event was opened by the Director of Regulation of Nuclear Installations and Materials at BAPETEN, Nur Syamsi Syam, who emphasized the importance of public participation in regulatory development. “This public consultation represents the community’s right to express their opinions, have them considered, and receive responses. Regulations must be responsive to the developments in nuclear technology,” she stated.
Syarifah Amelia, a representative of the Bangka Belitung Regional House of Representatives (DPRD Babel), expressed support for the development of transparent regulations and emphasized the importance of a clean energy transition that prioritizes public and environmental safety. Andri Nurtito, the Governor’s Expert Staff for Community Affairs and Energy and Mineral Resources, also highlighted the need for central and regional collaboration in the development of nuclear energy as a strategic national option.
The event continued with a technical presentation by Dedi Hermawan on the Draft Regulations for Power Reactor Safety Design, including updates to standards in accordance with IAEA SSR-2/1 Rev. 1 and provisions for both conventional reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Mira Wahyu Nugrahaeni presented an Evaluation of Nuclear Liability Accountability, covering the national legal framework, international instruments (Vienna Convention & CSC), and regulatory revision recommendations to strengthen legal and financial protection for the public.
The event was attended by various local government agencies, academics, law enforcement officials, and educational institutions, including representatives from the Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Environmental Agency, Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Communications and Informatics Office (Diskominfo), universities, the Attorney General’s Office, the police, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
BAPETEN expected that the input from this forum will reinforce the draft regulation, providing a national legal foundation to support the safe, secure, and internationally compliant development and operation of power reactors. [DP2FRZR/Mira/BHKK/OR]
