BAPETEN Follows Up on Discovery of Radioactive Containers at Jakarta International Container Terminal
Kembali 26 September 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 9 lihatFollowing the re-importation of shrimp products from the United States by PT BMS, which have arrived back in Indonesia, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) conducted an inspection of the cargo containers on September 26, 2025. This inspection was carried out to ensure that all products entering Indonesia are safe, secure, and free from radioactive contamination.
The activity began with BAPETEN coordinating with the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT), the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC), the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, and the management of PT BMS (Bahari Makmur Sejati)—the owner of the containers suspected of being contaminated with Cesium-137.
Furthermore, BAPETEN's Mobile Expert Support Team (MEST), led by BAPETEN Radiation Supervisor Aminuddin Tejo Nugroho, conducted an investigation of the suspected containers. Based on the initial detection by the Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) during the terminal transition and subsequent inspection data from the MEST team, the containers were confirmed to be free from Cesium-137 contamination.
BAPETEN emphasized that these inspections and oversight measures are part of its continuous efforts to protect public health and the environment from potential exposure to radioactive materials, specifically by securing inbound goods traffic at international ports against radioactive contamination.
Previously, in a press conference on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (Kemenko Pangan) confirmed that PT BMS's frozen shrimp were entirely safe for public consumption. This announcement was made in response to initial findings by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggesting that the frozen shrimp containers contained the radioactive material Cs-137.
