BAPETEN Conducts Field Verification of Site Evaluation Approval for Nuclear Power Plant on Kelasa Island, Bangka Belitung Islands
Kembali 25 Juli 2025 | Pojok Pengawasan PLTN | 2 lihatThe Directorate of Licensing of Nuclear Installation and Materials (DPIBN) of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) conducted a field verification of the prospective site for the Thorcon 500 Nuclear Power Plant on Kelasa Island, Bangka Belitung Islands, from July 21 to 25, 2025. The verification team consisted of eight evaluators with specialized site expertise, led by Nur Siwhan, an associate radiation supervisor (Pengawas Radiasi Ahli Madya).
During this verification, the DPIBN conducted a series of technical evaluations of the Site Evaluation Approval requirements documents, namely the Site Evaluation Program (PET) and the Site Evaluation Management System (SMET) submitted by PT Thorcon Power Indonesia (PT TPI) with registration number 1200001.25.
This verification aimed to ensure compliance between the PET and SMET documents with field conditions and compliance with applicable standards and legal requirements. Verification was also carried out to ensure the availability of adequate secondary data, site checks for monitoring station and drilling installation, testing of ideal and representative field conditions according to standards, and a review of management system documents.
The following is a complete list of verifications conducted:
- Verification of contours, field conditions, and rock at prospective drilling points and background radioactivity monitoring points, both at the prospective site and in and around Bangka Belitung.
- Verification of prospective earthquake monitoring locations (seismographs and accelerographs) and meteorological monitoring locations on Kelasa Island.
- Examination of evidence of volcanic release products (igneous and pyroclastic rocks) and river/creek flow.
- Initial verification of the availability of seismic, meteorological, and climatological monitoring infrastructure from relevant institutions, namely the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) Koba and BMKG Depati Amir.
- Verification of SMET documents and their derivatives.
Based on the verification results, PT TPI was deemed to have met the licensing requirements submitted through BALIS with several recommendations. Next, the site evaluation approval permit process can proceed to the issuance stage of the applicable regulations in accordance with the legislation.
