The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) leadership received a visit from the Canadian delegation, represented by Senior Trade Commissioner Meena Bhullar and her team, accompanied by Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRealis Group Inc., and his team, at the BAPETEN office on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. The event was attended by the Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment, Haendra Subekti; the Head of Legal Affairs, Cooperation, and Public Communication Bureau, Ishak; the Director of Inspection for Nuclear Installation and Material, Lukman Hakim; and relevant staff members.

During the meeting, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti opened the proceedings and delivered remarks, noting that BAPETEN had previously met with the AtkinsRealis delegation in 2024 at the Enlit Asia Conference in Malaysia. He emphasized Canada's strong position in fostering bilateral relations with Indonesia, given that Canada is viewed as a neutral nation and belongs to the group of non-nuclear-weapon states, just like Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the representative from the Canadian Embassy, Meena Bhullar, expressed her pleasure at meeting the BAPETEN delegation, despite the Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia being unable to attend the meeting in person. She also shared information regarding the scheduled state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Canada to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). On this occasion, Meena highlighted that the issue of energy transition is currently fundamental for Indonesia, encompassing the utilization of nuclear energy.

The event continued with a discussion involving AtkinsRealis President and CEO Ian L. Edwards, who mentioned that his team would also be meeting with various government agencies in Indonesia during their visit to Jakarta. Ian noted the importance of Indonesia’s decision to incorporate nuclear energy into its national policy. Ian also explained that AtkinsRealis is an engineering services company, including in the field of nuclear technology, capable of supporting various countries in preparing for new nuclear energy programs.

The event concluded with remarks from Haendra Subekti, who noted that current energy utilization trends are shifting from coal toward nuclear energy. In his closing remarks, Haendra added that a policy paper regarding Indonesia's nuclear energy policy had been submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. [BHKK/OR/Translator: GP]
