Previously, BRIN held an operating permit for a calibration facility using ionizing radiation sources at the KST G.A. Siwabessy site in South Jakarta. Following the relocation of all ionizing radiation sources used for calibration activities to the KST B.J. Habibie site in South Tangerang, BRIN submitted an application for an operating permit for the facility at the new location.

The BAPETEN verification team, led by Grace Esterina, Activity Manager of the Research and Industrial Facility Licensing Function Group, included BAPETEN Radiation Supervisors Adi Dradjat Noerwasana, Suryo Adi Ari Santosa, Wahyu Ramdhan Nugraha, Dwi Santosa, and Supriatno. The team was welcomed by Ismanto Jumadi, Head of the BRIN Radiation Technology Laboratory Services Team, along with all BRIN Radiation Technology Laboratory personnel who provide calibration services using ionizing radiation sources.

On the first day of the verification process, the activities began with an opening meeting, followed by a presentation from BRIN on the current status of the calibration facility following its relocation, as well as a presentation from BAPETEN regarding the results of the evaluation of the application for a calibration facility operating license. Afterward, the team conducted an inspection of the documents, equipment, and infrastructure at the BRIN Radiation Technology Laboratory in South Tangerang.

On the second and third days, the verification activities continued with an inspection of the calibration rooms that use radioactive sources, an evaluation of the adequacy of the installed radiation shielding, and a review of the testing methods and the commissioning of the facility.

The on-site verification concluded with the presentation of the inspection results, which included a number of findings and corrective action notes that need to be addressed by the BRIN Radiation Technology Laboratory in South Tangerang.

Some of the key areas of concern included an inventory of all radioactive sources used in the calibration facility’s operations, the provision of safety equipment related to the use of radioactive sources, and the refinement of quality management system guidelines.

Through this verification process, BAPETEN ensures that the operation of calibration facilities using ionizing radiation sources complies with safety and security requirements, as well as applicable laws and regulations in the field of nuclear energy, before an operating license is issued.[DPFRZR/Muhammad Angger Anompa/BHKK/SP]
