IAEA Legislative Assistance: Discussion of the Results on the Electricity Bill’s Review

Comprehensive and coherent national legislation is essential to ensure the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technology. To obtain a view on the adequacy of the substance of the nuclear energy Bill on international legal instruments related to safety, security, and safeguard, Directorate of Regulatory Development for Nuclear Installation and Materials (DP2IBN) held an online IAEA Legislative Assistance activities by presenting IAEA legal experts / practitioners under the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) from 31 May to 2 June 2021.

The event, was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), National Legal Development Agency (BPHN), and Directorate General of Legislation from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, was a follow-up meeting of the IAEA Legislative Assistance activities held earlier in September 2018 and August 2019.

Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Dahlia C.Sinaga said the government is currently making Omnibus Law, which is the purpose of the Omnibus Law is to facilitate the application of licensing, including in the nuclear industry.

“For that, we also have to change some articles in the Electricity Bill, especially about licensing and inspection," Dahlia explained.

Furthermore, Dahlia hopes this final draft gets some improvements from the IAEA, OLA and other experts.[BHKK/IP/OR/RA]
