Kembali 17 November 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 17 lihatOn Monday, November 17, 2025, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) hosted a delegation from the West Bangka Regency Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) at its office in Jakarta. The working visit was intended to facilitate a discussion regarding the planned construction of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in West Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands.
Representing BAPETEN were Nur Syamsi Syam, Director of Regulation for Nuclear Installations and Materials (DP2IBN); Abdul Qohhar Teguh Eko Prasetyo, coordinator for the Public Communication function; and several relevant staff members. The West Bangka Regency DPRD delegation included the Chairman of the DPRD, Badri Syamsu, accompanied by Deputy Chairman I Oktorazsari, Deputy Chairman II Samsir, and their team.
In his remarks, Abdul Qohhar Teguh Eko Prasetyo stated that BAPETEN welcomed the visit as an opportunity to address significant issues surrounding the proposed NPP in West Bangka. "Public concerns regarding the NPP plan have been gaining traction. Given the existence of both supporting and opposing views, it is important for us to gain a deeper understanding," explained Badri Syamsu, outlining the purpose of the visit.
The session continued with a presentation by the Director of DP2IBN, Nur Syamsi Syam, who provided an overview of the NPP development plan, slated for 2032, which includes West Bangka as a potential site. "BAPETEN regulates and ensures that radiation dose limits are strictly maintained so as not to impact public health. Regarding accident risk mitigation, the latest generation of NPPs, which are being considered for construction, incorporate rigorous safety requirements and systems," Nur explained. Furthermore, Arifin Muhammad Susanto, a Senior Radiation Inspector at the Directorate for Licensing of Nuclear Installations and Materials (DPIBN), provided an overview of the licensing process for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs). His presentation covered the regulatory framework for nuclear oversight, the roles involved in such oversight, the licensing workflow, and the various factors evaluated at each stage, with a particular focus on site assessment.
The event continued with a discussion and Q&A session addressing public aspirations. This included not only the potential positive impacts on the economy and energy sector but also concerns regarding safety and security, as well as the overall urgency of developing nuclear power plants.
"The central government’s commitment to developing nuclear power plants is driven, in part, by the need to address global warming and achieve 'Net Zero Emissions.' Studies indicate that, alongside renewable energy sources, nuclear power plants play a vital role in the energy transition, a goal to which the central government is fully committed," explained Nur.
Abdul Qohhar expressed his appreciation to the West Bangka Regency DPRD and provided concluding remarks for the event. It is expected that the insights gained during this session will be shared further, serving as educational and outreach material for the public, especially in West Bangka Regency. Moreover, the event is expected to contribute to the success of national programs within the energy sector. [BHKK/GP/CD/Translator: GP]
