This workshop aims to build human resource capacity in the Philippines, which is currently planning to establish a more independent Nuclear Regulatory Authority. Previously, nuclear oversight in the Philippines was conducted by the Philippines Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), which serves as the implementing body for nuclear energy in the country.

As part of the event, PNRI and INSEP/NNSA invited experts from BAPETEN to share their experiences on regulatory frameworks, licensing and inspection processes, as well as human resource development (HRD) and training programs. In line with BAPETEN commitment to the NPT, APSN, and particularly SEANWFZ, BAPETEN assigned personnel from the Safeguards Inspection Function Group, Directorate of Inspection of Nuclear Installation and Materials to represent the agency and fulfill these requests. The workshop was attended by various ministries and institutions in the Philippines, including PNRI, the Ministry of Defense, the Intelligence Agency, the Ministry of Energy, the Customs Agency, and the Strategic Trade Secretariat (JTA).

The workshop is expected to support the Philippines in formulating strategies in the field of safeguards, developing regulations related to safeguards, and designing human resource development (HRD) programs in the safeguards sector. [DIIBN/Setiawan/BHKK/OR/NA]
