The Indonesian delegation, led by Acting Chairman of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), Zainal Arifin, took part in the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS). Held in Vienna from April 13–24, 2026, the meeting was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The delegation also included BAPETEN Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti, as well as the Deputy Head of Mission of the Indonesian Embassy in Austria.

The meeting comprised three main components: plenary sessions, country group discussions, and an open-ended working group. It opened in a plenary session led by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, alongside the President of the 10th Review Meeting, Faizan Mansoor. In his remarks, Grossi underscored that nuclear safety is essential at all times and under all circumstances. He emphasized that this principle is non political and applies equally to all. He further reaffirmed that nuclear power plants must never be targeted in military activities. In an increasingly complex global context, he stressed that this principle must be upheld by all countries.

He further noted that seven new members have joined since the previous review meeting, bringing the total number of Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety to 98. The Convention serves as a cornerstone of the global nuclear safety regime. Through its peer review mechanism and international cooperation, it helps ensure that nuclear energy is used safely and responsibly.

Indonesia’s participation in this international forum reflects its commitment to continuously strengthening nuclear safety in line with the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety. The meeting also serves as a platform for participating countries to exchange experiences and conduct peer reviews.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Indonesian delegation held a bilateral meeting with the delegation of Pakistan. The meeting followed up on BAPETEN’s previous visit to the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) and aimed to explore potential cooperation in the oversight of nuclear power plants. The planned collaboration includes enhancing BAPETEN’s human resource capacity through joint training programs and workshops with PNRA personnel. The Pakistan delegation, led by PNRA Chairman Zia Hussain Shah, reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to support capacity building for BAPETEN’s personnel in nuclear power plant oversight.

On the second day of the meeting, the Indonesian delegation was also scheduled to meet with the Singapore delegation through the National Environment Agency (NEA). This meeting followed up on a proposal to initiate coordination in identifying potential areas of cooperation, which may be formalized through a memorandum of understanding between the two parties.
