The hybrid event formed part of public education efforts on the safe and responsible use of nuclear technology and involved various stakeholders from government institutions, professional communities, and civil society organizations.

In his presentation, Zainal Arifin explained that Cesium-137 has been widely used in the health, industrial, and research sectors; however, its utilization must comply with radiation safety and licensing requirements in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

“BAPETEN ensures that every use of radiation sources is conducted in accordance with safety principles, ranging from licensing and operational oversight to the preparation of competent human resources,” Zainal Arifin stated.

He emphasized that BAPETEN’s role as an independent regulator is to ensure the protection of workers, the public, and the environment, while at the same time providing legal certainty for nuclear energy users.

The webinar also discussed the importance of public literacy in understanding the distinction between the benefits of nuclear technology and its potential risks, in order to prevent misconceptions and undue stigma surrounding the use of radioisotopes.
