Radiotherapy License Verification at Bhayangkara Central Hospital (POLRI Medical and Health Center), Jakarta, and RSUD Aji Muhammad Parikesit Kutai Kartanegara

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), through the Directorate of Licensing for Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DPFRZR), conducted simultaneous radiotherapy facility verification activities at Bhayangkara Central Hospital (POLRI Medical and Health Center) in East Jakarta, DKI Jakarta Province, and Aji Muhammad Parikesit Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Kutai Kartanegara Regency (East Kalimantan Province) from November 4 to 7, 2025. The verification aimed to ensure that the bunkers for Linear Accelerator (LINAC) external beam therapy and brachytherapy were safe for workers, patients, the public, and the environment. The verification teams confirmed that the constructed designs met safety standards, verified through calculations regarding radiation shielding and main equipment, and that supporting equipment, human resource competence, and operational procedures for both LINAC and brachytherapy activities complied with radiation safety and source security requirements.
The inspection team at Bhayangkara Central Hospital (POLRI Medical and Health Center), East Jakarta, led by Herry Irawan (Activity Coordinator for the Health Facility Licensing Function Group) and his team members, verified a radiotherapy facility featuring a Varian Edge LINAC unit. Meanwhile, the inspection team at Aji Muhammad Parikesit Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Kutai Kartanegara, led by Ahmad Maulana (Senior Radiation Inspector for the Health Facility Licensing Function Group) and his team members, verified a radiotherapy facility featuring an Elekta Infinity LINAC unit and an Elekta Flexitron HDR Brachytherapy unit utilizing a Co-60 radioactive source.
The scope of the on-site inspection included document review and technical verification regarding the conformity of the constructed facility's design and the adequacy of radiation shielding thickness in the radiotherapy bunker; performance checks of primary and auxiliary equipment; radiation exposure measurements and dosimetry testing; assessment of patient workflows and personnel competence in operating LINAC and brachytherapy units in accordance with standards; and inspection of radiation protection equipment, radioactive source security measures, and the performance of radioactive source security systems.
Following the radiotherapy operating license verification, the hospital committed to addressing the findings presented by the BAPETEN team within a specified timeframe. The verification process proceeded smoothly, supported by the hospital's active and positive participation throughout; any identified deficiencies were viewed as constructive technical feedback and recommendations for ensuring radiation safety in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards.
By securing the BAPETEN radiotherapy facility license, the Central Bhayangkara Hospital (under the Indonesian National Police Medical and Health Center) reaffirms its commitment to providing superior, modern technology-based healthcare services, particularly in oncology and radiotherapy, thereby supporting the enhancement of healthcare quality for both the National Police force and the general public.
Aji Muhammad Parikesit Regional General Hospital is also expanding its services through the BAPETEN radiotherapy facility licensing process. The hospital plans to launch radiotherapy services at its Integrated Oncology Unit in the near future. "We plan to begin operations this year," stated Martina Yulianti, Director of RSUD AM Parikesit. "With the introduction of radiotherapy services, we hope RSUD AM Parikesit can become a cancer center for East Kalimantan, eliminating the need for cancer patients to be referred to facilities outside the region," she concluded.
