Nuclear Safety Seminar and Nuclear Product Exhibition 2024

To support the implementation of Law No. 10 of 1997 concerning nuclear power, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), in collaboration with the PLN Institute of Technology (ITPLN), held the Nuclear Safety Seminar (SKN) and Nuclear Product Exhibition (PPN) 2024. The activity carried the theme "Improving the Safety and Security of Nuclear Technology to Support Low Carbon Energy and Advance Public Health and Welfare."

This time, SKN and PPN were held on August 20-21, 2024, at the IT PLN Campus in a hybrid manner via Zoom and live broadcast via the YouTube channel. SKN 2024 was attended by keynote speakers from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), the National Energy Council (DEN), and cybersecurity experts from the United States, namely the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory. SKN 2024 also presents 50 scientific papers and posters in the field of nuclear technology, from nuclear technology for medical purposes to nuclear power plants. In addition, PPN 2024 provides 23 exhibition stands, which include NPP vendors, industry, hospitals, and radiation technology service consultants.

In his speech, Acting Chairman of BAPETEN Sugeng Sumbarjo said that "This SKN focuses on the use of nuclear for energy (preparation of nuclear power plants). With a population of almost 280 million in Indonesia, the need for energy is increasing, and it is also hoped that by 2060 net zero emissions will be achieved, which is currently the Draft Law on New and Renewable Energy (RUU EBT) is in the harmonization stage in the Indonesian House of Representatives. BAPETEN has made a significant contribution in ensuring that aspects of safety, security, and nuclear waste management are well covered."

The event continued with an opening by the chancellor of the PLN Institute of Technology, Iwa Garniwa, who said that "Nuclear energy, which has so far been considered a scary taboo, but with the development of the times and also the many forms of nuclear power utilization, nuclear energy has developed well. Thus, this event is designed to provide education to the general public and students in particular.”

At the end of the event, it was closed with a conclusion by Hendra Subekti, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment (PKN), including the utilization of new and renewable energy sources so that they can be implemented properly. BAPETEN also carried out strengthening 3S (Safety, Security, Safeguards) to maintain supervision of the use of nuclear power safely for the community and the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the plan to form NEPIO for the PLTN development acceleration team. Other additions include the development of risk-based and performance-based cybersecurity to protect data from unexpected hacks, accompanied by training and cybersecurity guidelines, as well as the optimization of medical radiation doses so that more actual dose data history is recorded.

On the second day, PPN was closed with the awarding of the best booth to PT Thorcon Indonesia and the booth with the most visitors to PT Pratita Prama Nugraha. This activity is expected to be a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience between stakeholders, ranging from scientists, academics, the nuclear industry, hospitals, activists, and observers of nuclear safety, as well as from professional associations.
