Exit Meeting for Radioactive Source Safety Inspection Activities in Collaboration between BAPETEN and the US Department of Energy

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held an exit meeting for the radioactive source safety inspection activities between BAPETEN and the US Department of Energy (US-DoE). The meeting was led by the Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection, Zainal Arifin. The meeting presented the results of the inspection conducted the previous day at a radioactive source utilization facility.
The BAPETEN inspection team, under the supervision of the Director of Inspection of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DIFRZR), Zulkarnain, presented the inspection results to obtain input on the process and the assessment of compliance with safety and security regulations, both nationally and internationally, by US-DoE experts.
The US-DoE delegation, Jake Atwell, Russell Haffner, Robert Marek, and Matthew Klatt, provided various input and suggestions for improving the inspection process for the use of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), conducted on July 8, 2025, at PT Megatek Konsindo and PT Berkat Jaya Mayandra. They emphasized the importance of detailed and comprehensive radioactive source safety assessments, including the implementation of a safety culture. They also recommended the use of a tracking system for the transportation and utilization of radioactive materials in the NDT field.
At the meeting's conclusion, Zainal Arifin expressed his expectation that the collaboration between BAPETEN and the US-DoE would continue in the years to come, recognizing the importance of sharing expert knowledge and experience to improve oversight of nuclear energy utilization in Indonesia.
