The audit aimed to ensure that environmental laboratory facilities in Indonesia meet the highest standards for detecting radioactive contamination, specifically to guarantee the safety of food products exported to the United States.
The audit was led by experts from the Winchester Engineering and Analytical Center (WEAC) and the FDA’s Office of International Policy. The team included Dr Scott, a senior research chemist with over 17 years of experience in radiochemistry; Brian R. Sweeney, an expert in radionuclide analysis who has been with the FDA since 2008; and Darlene Krieger, an international policy analyst with more than two decades of experience.
The primary focus of the audit was to verify BAPETEN’s laboratory capabilities in detecting radioactive contamination, specifically the isotope cesium-137 (Cs-137) in food products. High-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry technology served as a key parameter in this verification process.
The session was opened by Judi Pramono, BAPETEN’s Director of Technical Support and Nuclear Emergency Preparedness, and was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), which plays a role in ensuring radiation safety standards for marine commodities.
"The presence of these FDA experts provides a valuable opportunity to align our environmental laboratory’s technical procedures with rigorous food safety standards. This is a significant step toward enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesian export products," stated Judi Pramono.
During the visit, the FDA team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the development of analytical methods, the readiness of human resources, and the oversight systems for food products, covering both imported and domestic goods. This audit result is expected to serve as a crucial foundation for enhancing international market confidence, particularly that of the United States, in the safety of Indonesian food products.
Beyond strengthening access to export markets, this audit is also part of broader efforts to bolster national radiological protection and ensure the ongoing safety of consumers. [DKKN/Firdaus/Translator: GP]
