The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held a meeting with Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono to discuss licensing of medical devices that fall into the Electronic Medical Radiation category. This meeting took place in Jakarta on February 17, 2025, with the aim of strengthening the supervision and regulation of the use of radiation-based medical devices in Indonesia.

On this occasion, Dante Saksono Harbuwono welcomed BAPETEN's initiative to tighten licensing and supervision of medical devices that contain radiation elements. According to him, cooperation between the Ministry of Health and BAPETEN is very important in ensuring that every medical device circulating in Indonesia meets the specified safety and quality standards. In particular, in the near future, the Ministry of Health will increase the completeness of equipment related to radiation facilities and radioactive materials, which are needed by many hospitals throughout Indonesia, to make it easier for the public to access health facilities with complete equipment according to their needs.

Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Sugeng Sumbarjo, in his speech, said that monitoring radiation-based medical devices is one of the main priorities to ensure the safety of patients and medical personnel. "We are committed to strengthening regulations and supervision of medical devices that use radiation to ensure the safety and effectiveness of their use in health facilities."

At this meeting, the Deputy Minister of Health was accompanied by a group from the Ministry of Health, including Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Health Devices Rizka Andalycia, Special Staff to the Minister of Health for Governance and Bureaucratic Reform Bambang Widiyanto, Director of Production and Distribution of Medical Devices Dede Mulyadi, Director of Clinical Services Obrin Parulian, and Director of Referral Health Service Facilities Ghotama Airlangga. Meanwhile, from BAPETEN, Acting Chairman of BAPETEN with Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection Zainal Arifin, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti, Director of Licensing of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials Asep Saefulloh Hermawan, and Manager of Health Facility Licensing Function Group Activities Iin Indartati.

Discussions at this meeting included licensing mechanisms for radiation-based medical devices and safety evaluation procedures, as well as steps to improve coordination between the two institutions in supervising the distribution and use of these medical devices. It is expected that the regulations implemented can provide legal certainty for producers and distributors, as well as increase protection for the public as users of health services.

Apart from that, BAPETEN and the Ministry of Health also highlighted the importance of education and outreach to medical personnel regarding the safe use of radiation-based medical devices and in accordance with applicable regulations.

This meeting confirmed the commitment of BAPETEN and the Ministry of Health to maintain the quality and safety of radiation-based medical devices in Indonesia. Both parties agreed to continue to coordinate in the development of regulations and supervision in order to provide optimal benefits for the community and medical personnel. For this reason, a task force will be formed consisting of members from the Ministry of Health and BAPETEN. (BHKK/SP/DA/Translator: GP)
