The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) conducted supervision of decontamination activities related to the source of Caesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination in the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate, Serang Regency, Banten. This activity was part of the government’s efforts to ensure environmental safety and protect communities surrounding industrial areas identified as having radioactive exposure. The implementation of this activity was scheduled to take place from 13 to 17 October 2025.

Starting the second day of the decontamination activities related to the source of Cesium 137 contamination at the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate, the Head of the Centre for Regulatory Assessment of Radiation Facility and Radioactive Materials (P2STPFRZR), Dedik Eko Sumargo, along with the Deputy Head of BAPETEN Emergency Response Unit Team Agus Yudhi Pristianto and the decontamination supervision team, conducted technical coordination at the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate on 14 October 2025 to ensure that the decontamination activities were carried out effectively and efficiently while maintaining the safety of personnel working in the field.

The activities then continued with dose rate measurements and decontamination activities involving the removal and cleaning of materials at 10 predetermined locations identified as radiation source sites, including vendor stalls, open areas, and residents’ houses. These activities covered survey operations, perimeter installation, data collection, preparation for resident relocation, the removal and transfer of the contamination source, as well as public outreach to communities surrounding the identified locations.

Led by the Director of Air Quality Protection and Management of the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/ BPLH), Edward Nixon Pakpahan, the activities concluded with a daily evaluation report delivered by all joint agencies involved, including BAPETEN, KLH/ BPLH, BRIN, the Indonesian Army CBRN Unit Nubika, the Mobile Brigade Corps Gegana CBRN Unit, and other relevant parties. This evaluation aimed to review the progress of activities carried out on the day as well as to coordinate technical preparations for the following day’s activities.

The decontamination activities were carried out in coordination with various relevant agencies under the supervision of the Cesium 137 Handling Task Force, which was established based on the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Decree Number 43 of 2025. In this activity, BAPETEN served as the technical regulatory authority responsible for ensuring that all decontamination processes were conducted in accordance with national and international radiation safety standards. Previously, during the Roll Call for Preparedness in Handling Hazard Vulnerabilities and Decontamination of Cesium 137 Radionuclides on 13 October 2025, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency BPLH as the Daily Chair of the Cesium 137 Radionuclide Radiation Handling Task Force, emphasized that all decontamination processes must comply with BRIN technical standards and BAPETEN oversight principles and be completed as swiftly as possible, including public health management measures and law enforcement actions against the source of contamination.
